♥♥ I WAS A LUCKY ONE !!! Were You ♥♥

THOSE BORN 1920-1979

READ TO THE BOTTOM FOR QUOTE OF THE MONTH BY JAY LENO. IF YOU DON'T READ ANYTHING ELSE---VERY WELL STATED

TO ALL THE KIDS WHO SURVIVED the 1930's, 40's, 50's, 60's and 70's!!

First, we survived being born to mothers who smoked and/or drank while they were pregnant.

They took aspirin, ate blue cheese dressing, tuna from a can, and didn't get tested for diabetes.

Then after that trauma, we were put to sleep on our tummies in baby cribs covered with bright colored lead-based paints.

We had no childproof lids on medicine bottles, doors or cabinets and when we rode our bikes, we had no helmets, not to mention, the risks we took hitchhiking.

As infants & children, we would ride in cars with no car seats, booster seats, seat belts or air bags.

Riding in the back of a pick up on a warm day was always a special treat..

We drank water from the garden hose and NOT from a bottle.

We shared one soft drink with four friends, from one bottle and NO ONE actually died from this.

We ate cupcakes, white bread and real butter and drank Kool-aid made with sugar, but we weren't overweight because,

WE WERE ALWAYS OUTSIDE PLAYING!

We would leave home in the morning and play all day, as long as we were back when the streetlights came on.

No one was able to reach us all day. And we were OK.

We would spend hours building our go-carts out of scraps and then ride down the hill, only to find out we forgot the brakes After running into the bushes a few times, we learned to solve the problem.

We did not have Playstations, Nintendo's, X-boxes, no video games at all, no 150 channels on cable, no video movies or DVD's, no surround-sound or CD's, no cell phones, no personal computers, no Internet or chat rooms.......

WE HAD FRIENDS and we went outside and found them!

We fell out of trees, got cut, broke bones and teeth and there were no lawsuits from these accidents.

We ate worms and mud pies made from dirt, and the worms did not live in us forever.
We were given BB guns for our 10th birthdays, made up games with sticks and tennis balls and, although we were told it would happen, we did not poke out very many eyes.

We rode bikes or walked to a friend's house and knocked on the door or rang the bell, or just walked in and talked to them!

Little League had try outs and not everyone made the team. Those who didn't had to learn to deal with disappointment. Imagine that!!

The idea of a parent bailing us out if we broke the law was unheard of. They actually sided with the law!

These generations have produced some of the best risk-takers, problem solvers and inventors ever!

The past 50 years have been an explosion of innovation and new ideas.

We had freedom, failure, success and responsibility, and we learned HOW TO DEAL WITH IT ALL!

If YOU are one of them CONGRATULATIONS!

You might want to share this with others who have had the luck to grow up as kids, before the lawyers and the government regulated so much of our lives for our own good .

While you are at it, show it to your kids so they will know how brave (and lucky) their parents were.

Kind of makes you want to run through the house with scissors, doesn't it?!

The quote of the month is by Jay Leno:

'With hurricanes, tornado's, fires out of control, mud slides, flooding, severe thunderstorms tearing up the country from one end to another, and with the threat of bird flu and terrorist attacks, are we sure this is a good time to take God out of the Pledge of Allegiance?'

Hey!! guys hope all of you have a safe a blessed week end...as for me Its Len's Birthday so I need to take out the Swifter duster dust off some of these cobwebs from sitting here at this dang computer and show him I can still made a pretty darn good carrot cake...Take me a long bath, do my hair, put a bow on my head, put on my make up, put perfume in all the right places, wrap myself up with just saran wrap on...so Len can say "What left over again "

I will see all of you on Sunday as its Super Bowl day...And the only moving parts Len has on that day is his mouth and bowels... So I am free to Roam alone...YAHOO!!!

Hugs and smiles Gl♥ria

Hey girl. This cracked me up, but it's so true. I remember laying in the backseat of our station wagon, backwards no less, with no seat belt, so I could look up at the stars through the cool glass (yes, it was a vista cruiser lol) I remember breaking my nose playing football in the empty lot down the street (no flags for us!) and having all the kids gather round saying, uh oh, that doesn't look good, and someone else reaching up and putting it back where it belonged - and yes I still have the bump and no I will never get it fixed by a plastic surgeon! Funny, I don't ever remember being scared, or worrying about cancer, or being snatched off the streets, and lo and behold 49 years later I'm still here and relatively healthy and I think I still have all my wits haha. Yes the world has changed, and there are things out there that we never had to worry about, but sheesh, can we let them be kids? Great post, thanks dear! Kathy (ps my daughter is 20 and just got her first video game this year!)

Good post, Gloria!! Yes, I am of that generation, and my kids were born before 1972, also. We were so fortunate to grow up during the "Happy Days"!! Lots of fun memories. Sally

I've gotten this in an email before and enjoyed reading it just as much this time. And it's so damn true! As for bike helmets, I'm a bad mommy and don't really enforce that rule.

I love your saran wrap and leftovers again comment. Cracked me up! Happy birthday Len!!!!!!!!!!!! Hope your bowels don't get in the way of you watching the game too much!

Thanks for stopping by my blog today. You were right. I did find the idea for my island on Picket's Place. After you reminded me, I showed my hubby where the idea came from. I can't believe how similar they turned out. He never even saw the original. Too funny!

I have read this before and just love it. When you look at what all the young mothers do today, it makes you wonder how we did survive! This brings back some wonderful memories!!

I am so glad I grew up during Happy Days, and I was so fortunate to live in a very small town and bring my children up the same way. I wish my grandchildren would have had the pleasure of the same kind of upbringing, but I don't know where that would be today. What a great post and tell Len Happy Birthday. Hugs, Marty

Since you are speaking of my generation, I totally identify with this post. In my opinion you did it justice.

Can hardly believe that I lived through, what in retrospect, seems to have been a dangerous period in time. While glad that I did, I am so sad that the current generation will miss all the experiences we had growing up.

appearantly I was lucky too!
(1971)....I remember jumping over the back seat of the station wagon into the box part to avoid the huge smack for torturing my little sister! lol
I remember spankings too....maybe they should bring some of those back ...just judging by the "time out" generation in this neighborhood with thier attitudes and poor manners...
thanks for the post!

What a great post! And it's true! Me and my SIL were reminiscing the other day about dancing at the local bar. We were in our 20's (early 1980's) and our pursed hung on the back of the chair, our drinks sat on the table and we didn't have to worry about anyone taking them or putting anything in our drinks - go figure! ~ Robyn

Good Morning, Gloria, Great post! My mother use to let me walk to the grocery store for, armed with a list and money, crossing a pretty busy highway when I was David's age...10. And I always made it back home safe and sound. What a shame we can't do that anymore with our own kids!

The Leno comment was really good!

And I hope Len enjoys his birthday and "gifts!" LOL! Leftovers are good! LOLOL! ~hugs, Rhonda :)

Hi Gloria,
AHH! Those were the days weren't they? Children could be children without fear. Everyone has way too much fear these days! Most days I just turn off the news - it can turn a stable person into an bowl of jelly if you listen to too much of their fear mongering!

Jay Leno is so right - we need God now more than ever!

Happy birthday to your sweet hubby. I am sure he will enjoy his beautiful perfumed and saran wrapped wife. Men - you know they LOVE those leftovers - no matter how much they may protest! :-)

Have a great Super Bowl party of your own on Sunday!
Blessings,
Kymber

HAHAAHAHAHAHA! Omg! I was laughing so hard! You go girl and wrap yourself up - put a big bow on you so Len can unwrap his gift! haaaa! ;) I loved the post...that is so true how much more fun I had as a kid with less worries, less "entertainment" and less parental supervision! haa! We would be gone all day roaming into the neighbors homes and just had to be home when the streetlights came on. Now for my kids to play, I have to play phone tag with other mothers, wait while they scroll thru their blackberries finding an appointment time for when our kids can "play" and then it's usually some scheduled activity that has to be paid for! And it's not just the parents who are busy - it's the kids whose schedules are planned a month in advance. Literally! My daughter wanted to play with a friend but the girl was booked solid for a month! Really makes you stop & think.. what are we doing?! Well hope Len has a nice birthday and enjoys his..um...cake? ;) See you around Blogland tomorrow! ~ Laurie p.s. Oh! thanks for saying the sweet things about my little girl!

Hey Grandma, I wish I was born in those days. Now days everybody is paranoid to do anything. All these people have to much time on their hand to think of all the crap that we shouldn't do. Don't drink too much bottle water, don't drink out of the sink. I say to hell with all that nonsense. Live life and don't get tied up with the petty things.
Love ya,
Josh
P.S.
Kyra is doing well, they are going to do an Echocardiogram on monday to measure the size of hole in her heart.

Gloria, you're cracking me up. I'm thankful Phil likes leftovers. :) hehe

I'm a child of the 60's and all of this is so true. The good ol' days. I think in the summertime I only seen the inside of my house when it was time for a bath and to sleep. I was a tomboy and spent a lot of that time outside splashing in the creek and climbing trees. (hmmmmmmmm..wonder if I could still climb a tree?)

Have a happy day,

Kris
